A legendary thoroughbred race horse, Arkle was born in 1947, sired by Nearco. Arkle was ridden by Pat Taaffe and trained by Tom Dreaper, Arkle had a short but impressive steeple chasing career, winning three Cheltenham gold cups and a host of other races.
Arkle won over a number of distances from 1m 6f to 3m 5f winning 27 races from 35 starts. in 1964 Arkle won the Irish grand national and the Hennessy Gold cup. In 1966 Arkle`s racing career was cut short with a fractured pedal bone and was in plaster for four months, although he did make a good recovery he would never race again.
